Acupuncture for Infertility

Acupuncture for Male Infertility

Infertility is a problem for up to 3 out of every 10 men. That’s a lot! One big problem: infertility drugs are far less successful for men than they are for women. However, acupuncture can help. Studies have shown that acupuncture can actually increase fertility in men by up to 50%.

Fertility Drugs in Males

Many fertility drugs that are successful for women are only successful in one-third of men.

Just as acupuncture can increase ovarian function in women, it can do the same for sperm production in men. By increasing blood flow, acupuncture can help with problems such as low sperm count, misshapen sperm and poor motility (sperm movement). One of the biggest factors affecting male infertility is stress, and acupuncture can balance hormones in the pituitary gland affecting stress, which can balance the reproductive cycle. Keep in mind, there are certain sperm abnormalities that acupuncture doesn’t help with, such as sperm immaturity.

Are You the Right Man for the Acupuncture?

Male infertility, which is defined as having
unprotected sex for one year without
results, occurs in up to 30% of men.

With male infertility, many problems could be at fault other than sperm problems. Before trying acupuncture – or any serious medical procedure – first try health and lifestyle changes that affect reproduction. For example, decreasing your alcohol intake, eating organic as opposed to processed foods, and taking vitamins may balance your hormones and increase your fertility. Specific vitamins that you may be deficient in include Vitamin C (which keeps sperm from sticking together) and zinc (increases sperm quality and motility). Also, try to lower stress through lifestyle changes, relaxation techniques, exercise, or even meditation.
